Demolition, disassembly, and disposal — Estimated time: 2-3 days
Demolition, or tear-out, is a vital part of any home
renovation. In this stage, the old elements are broken down
and removed to make room for the newer, better materials
and appliances. Compared to the effort that goes into
installing a kitchen, demolition is a much simpler and often
shocking process. During demolition, all appliances,
cabinetry, and countertops will have to be removed. In most
remodels, the flooring, wallpaper, and drywall will often
require replacement and need to be taken out as well.
During demolition is often when problems will be
discovered. For example, removing drywall may reveal
electrical or structural issues that need to be dealt with. If
you're doing some of the demolition yourself make sure you
know what is behind a wall before you swing your
sledgehammer. Don't forget to wear pants, long-sleeves,
boots, and gloves to avoid cuts and scrapes. Seal off the
demolition area with sheet plastic to keep other areas of the
home clean.
